Misconceptions about Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a very powerful tool and can be used to help people overcome a variety of problems. It has been used for centuries, but many people still don’t know much about it or have only seen shows from stage hypnotists at carnivals. Let’s clear up those misconceptions! Here’s my video also gives another take. See more of my videos here.
Many people have fears about hypnotherapy because of misconceptions.
Many people have fears about hypnotherapy because of misconceptions. These include:
- Fear of the unknown, which can be overcome by reading up on the subject and finding out what it’s all about.
- Fear of losing control, which is understandable when you consider how powerful our minds are. However, with a trained professional, using a client-centred approach, guiding you through every step of your journey into hypnosis, there’s no reason to worry because it’s you who’s always in control.
- Revealing secrets or memories that might come back to haunt us later on in life – remember the client is always aware of what is going on around them and always has control of what they choose to reveal. Furthermore, a client-centered trained hypnotherapist will always give their client a choice to either talk about their experience or keep it for themselves.
The 6 misconceptions about hypnotherapy.
- Would you lose control?
The misconception about hypnotherapy is that you lose control. It’s just not true because you are in control, conscious and aware and you’re making conscious choices.
2. Would you get stuck in a trance.
First, it’s important to understand that hypnosis is not sleep. It is a relaxed state of concentrated focus and attention on your problem or issue. Second, you do not get stuck in hypnosis. You can always choose to leave at any time. All you do is go into a deep state of relaxation, but you are never unconscious. After the session ends, you will feel more relaxed than before you started.
3. Would you reveal secrets.
Some people say that a hypnotherapist can make you reveal your secrets during a session. This is not true. With hypnosis, the client is always aware of his/her surroundings, but laser-focused on one thing, she/he can never reveal anything against their will. Essentially, they have the power to enter or leave the hypnotic state at any time during a session. A client-centred hypnotherapist always gives their client an option to reveal only what they are comfortable revealing.
People often have the misconception that hypnosis is some kind of mind control or brainwashing technique. It’s not. A trained hypnotherapist can’t make you do things under hypnosis that you wouldn’t normally do. The way that hypnosis works is that it allows your unconscious mind to talk to your conscious mind more clearly, so you can benefit from changes much more easily.
4. You think you cannot be hypnotised
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. Many people think that hypnotherapy is only for special or creative types of people. Yet any person can gain the benefits from hypnosis, including those who have had no experience with it before. Most people can be hypnotised. In fact, a small percentage of the population is completely immune to it. The truth is, no matter how skeptical you are, even you can be hypnotised. Even though there are some people who will say they don’t respond well to hypnosis, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be hypnotised – sometimes it means they might have a different experience than most people during a session and may not feel as deeply affected by it. Other times it means that you just did not give yourself permission to be hypnotised and that you are holding on to being in control.
5. The therapist will control your mind
The therapist can not your mind. They won’t make decisions for you or force their opinions on anyone, remember, you are always aware of what it going on. Furthermore, a client-centred therapist does not lead the client, the client is always on the driving sit.
6. Would you lose consciousness?
You might think you’ll fall asleep or be in a complete altered state of consciousness, but the truth is that you often remain very aware during hypnosis. In fact, you are even able to maintain a conversation while under hypnosis because you are still conscious. Even when your body feels very relaxed and ‘heavy’, it is still functioning normally while in a hypnotic state.
Stage hypnotists have made people hesitant about hypnotherapy.
There’s a reason why stage hypnotists are called “hypnotists.” They make it look easy, but there’s actually a lot more to it than meets the eye. Usually, stage hypnotists choose carefully who they want to work with, and they have their own techniques that don’t apply to therapy at all.
Many people believe that hypnosis and stage hypnosis are the same. In fact, there is a world of difference between the two. Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective therapy for a wide range of issues for personal help and growth and is not used to control or alter anyone’s behaviour. It is a therapy that is used to help clients with their personal or professional development. Stage hypnosis, on the other hand, can use pretext to create an illusion that may not always be beneficial.

There’s no need to fear hypnotherapy, it is a powerful tool. Hypnotherapy has been used to help people from all walks of life–from those struggling with addiction, anxiety, and depression to those who just want to lose weight. The goal is to help you connect with your inner resources to help you determine the best way forward for you.
Hypnosis works by allowing your conscious mind (the part that thinks and worries) to relax while another part of your brain takes over and focuses on positive changes for you.
Find a reputable therapist.
To find a reputable hypnotherapist, you must evaluate your options. Not all hypnotherapy practitioners are qualified or certified by reputable bodies that are authorities in the field.
Your hypnotherapist should strictly adhere to the ethical guidelines of these leading bodies. As a member of the South African Institute for Hypnotism (SAIH), which is affiliated with these international organisations, means that I facilitate a strictly client-centred non-medical approach in my practice.
Conclusion
